Jeremiah Series Begins in January
On Sunday, January 30, Castine will share in a sermon series focused on the Old Testament book of Jeremiah. For six Sundays, we will enter the world of this prophet of God. Jeremiah lived and ministered in an exceedingly challenging time. He watched the nation of Judah continue to ignore God’s message until, through terrific social, political, and spiritual upheaval the nation was taken over by a foreign nation, namely, Babylon.
Jeremiah is one of the most personable books in the Old Testament. Throughout the book the reader follows a man clearly called by God to an impossible assignment. Jeremiah struggled to faithfully deliver God’s message of rescue to a people, fully enveloped in pride, who had little to no interest. He had to compete with false prophets who delivered a competing message that sin was of little consequence and the nation's best days were ahead. The book of Jeremiah highlights that truth is hard and lies have significant consequences.
Because the book is long, 52 chapters, we will only cover some of the major ideas. Your staff chose those ideas that sparked passion for them and hopefully will strengthen and encourage you. We begin on January 30 connecting the New Testament Christian with Old Testament truth. Next, we explore Jeremiah’s faithfulness despite his many reasons to forfeit faith. We move to taking about God’s calling. Especially, what does one experience in a calling and how does someone know God’s expectation for them? Even though Jeremiah is a book of great struggle and discouragement, hope surfaces as an anchor for the soul. Just when it seems hope is lost, God renews Jeremiah to continue in his service. So, hope is one of our themes. Like most people, moving away from God is slight, incremental, rather than a gigantic shift in someone’s beliefs. Something, no somethings, often innocently enter ones thinking that leads subtly to a reduction in the fear of God. We will reflect on a time when the top leader in the nation lost his fear of God. This will remind us to guard the fear of the Lord in our lives as the culture moves deeper away from fearing the Lord. Finally, we conclude observing the greatness of God as He uses entire nations for His purposes. I think finishing with the power of God produces peace in those who fear and follow Him. Our lives are in the care of One who shapes nations!
To provide additional support, there will be readings from Jeremiah along with devotions to encourage your faith. Both will be located on the Castine Church app. We will explain more as the series begins. Of course, if you are unclear, someone will assist you at a connection center.
January 30 will soon be here. I hope you will plan now to join us for the Jeremiah series, biblical readings, and devotions. It is wonderful way to begin a new year uniting and growing in the ways of God!
